Two Brush Fires Fanned By Strong Winds

Two Brush Fires Fanned By Strong Winds

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Two brush fires burned in separate parts of St. Johns County on Sunday. Officials said both were fed by strong evening winds.

Intense flames on the 800 Block of Viscaya Boulevard took more than two hours to control. The crackle of the burning wood sent homeonwers to their own lawns, hoses in hand.

However, investigators were happy to report no homes were damaged and that only about two acres of brush burned.

It was a highly visible fire that sparked in a residential St. Augustine Shores neighborhood.

That fire was in stark contrast to another fire Division of Forestry had to handle about 20 miles away in a remote swamp. That was located off County Road 204 and Old Brick Road near the county line with Flagler.

DoF had to ask crews from Gainesville to help create a fire line with tractors.

Another Brush Fire Near I-95 and SR 16

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- A second brush fire today has broken out and is threatening at least one home.

The fire is burning on private property off Green Acres Road, in the area of State Road 16 and Interstate 95.

The property owners have said they have moved their horses out of the way, and fire crews arrived shortly after 2 p.m. to help keep the fire from the house.

Other homeowners in the area said they are prepared to evacuate if they are forced to do so, but so far aren't planning to go anywhere.

The smoke is thick, and chief meteorologist Tim Deegan said prevailing winds are blowing from the southeast to the northwest, meaning smoke could cause problems along I-95, though nothing has yet been reported.

St. Augustine Dealership Promises Free Cars if it Rains

St. Augustine Dealership Promises Free Cars if it Rains

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- It's not a blow-up gorilla, but a new promotion by Bozard Ford off Interstate 95 has been drawing king-sized attention.

"We were looking for a sales promotion that would get people talking," explained Jeff King, general manager.

If you buy a car from Bozard in March and it rains 1 inch the morning of April 8, the dealership will refund the full purchase price of the car. That includes both new and pre-owned models.

That may sound like a foolish business plan, but the promotion is insured and King said Bozard will pay an insurance premium based on the number of cars it sells this month.
