Students sport red in support of classmate undergoing surgery

ST.AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Bus stops were full of students wearing red today in St. Johns County.

They were wearing red to show their support for Tyler McLaughlin, an 8th grader at Liberty Pines Academy who underwent open heart surgery Tuesday in Jacksonville.

Tyler, now 13, was born without a pulmonary artery and with a hole in his heart.

TMac is Tyler's nickname. His supporters posted dozens of pictures on Facebook and Twitter using #WearRedforTMac.

After more than eight hours of surgery, a family friends tells First Coast News his procedure was a success.

He is recovering at Wolfson Children's Hospital.

FHP: Bicyclist killed in St. Johns County crash

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A bicyclist was struck and killed by a car in St. Johns County Tuesday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident happened about 9 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 1 South and Datil Pepper Road.

The crash report states a Honda Fit was traveling in the inside lane of southbound U.S. 1 when it struck a St. Augustine man who was attempting to bike across the highway. 

Charles Frederick Barret, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the crash report. 

Troopers say the investigation is on-going and charges are pending.

Hundreds remember slain St. Augustine man

ST. AUGUSTINE — Hundreds gathered Sunday afternoon to honor a Saint Augustine man who was killed Tuesday night.

Police said a group of Jacksonville teenagers followed Carl Starke home, tried to steal his car and then shot him.

Starke is autistic and officers believe he was seen as an easy target.

At the Saint Johns Family Funeral Home, a song played for 36-year-old Carl Starke.

ID=32148285ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — An autistic man fatally shot Tuesday at a St. Augustine condominium complex was targeted, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

Carl Starke, 36, of St. Augustine, was at Wal-Mart Tuesday when the suspects spotted him in the parking lot, decided he was a "soft" target and followed him home with the intention of stealing his car, said St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar at a news conference Friday afternoon.

The sheriff said the suspects did not steal his car, but instead "murdered Carl in cold blood in our county."

St. Johns Sheriff: Duval teens responsible for crime spree

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Many people move from Duval to St. Johns County for what they believe are better schools and safer neighborhoods.

However some of that crime may be crossing county lines now, according to some of the top law enforcement officials in the county. They are blaming a recent crime wave, including the murder of Carl Starke, 36, on suspects coming down from Jacksonville/Duval County.

The statements came from both the county's sheriff, David Shoar, and St. Augustine Police Chief Loren Luders.

"Our county has changed, unfortunately it's not for the better," Luders said at a press conference Friday afternoon.

Shoar says there have been 4-5 incidents in the past week alone of car burglaries and thefts where the suspects arrested came from Duval County.

Transformer explosion temporarily closes St. Augustine Walmart

ST. AUGUSTINE — A transformer explosion early Sunday morning forced an evacuation of the Walmart on U.S. 1 in St. Augustine, according to a spokesperson with St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

The explosion occurred at 7:30 a.m. and the store did not reopen until 10:30 a.m. that same morning. The store was evacuated after it lost power.

'Hustler Hollywood' coming to St. Augustine Outlets

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - Hustler Hollywood, part of Larry Flynt's Hustler empire, is coming to St. Augustine.

The store, which calls itself "an upscale, modern erotic boutique dedicated to providing a sophisticated shopping experience for the sexually curious," will open Aug. 24 in St. Augustine outlets, at Florida 16 and I-95. A grand opening celebration will be held Sep. 5.

Among the items featured on its website are Gummie Panties, Fatty Patty The Jumbo Love Doll and an entire section devoted to BDSM, which apparently can involve whips, chains and some devices whose purposes aren't quite clear.

But the website also says it has a knowledgeable staff.

The chain has 14 stores around the country. The only other one in Florida is in Fort Lauderdale.
