The St Johns Sheriffs Office made items discovered at McCullough Creek available for viewing in an effort to help identify the skeletal remains discovered on February 12.
Investigators with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Robbery/Homicide Section are investigating the discovery of human skeletal remains (adult) near McCullough Creek in South West St. Johns County.
The remains, which are in an advanced stage of decomposition, may have been exposed to the elements for an extended period of time (perhaps years). The remains were examined by The Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday in an effort to identify the individual and notify potential family members of the discovery. The initial examination however, was unable to confirm a match to any known missing persons in St. Johns County, although forensic examinations are continuing. Investigators also contacted surrounding law enforcement agencies on Monday to begin case comparisons.
Currently the remains are believed to be that of a male; however the findings are inconclusive at this time. Several items were located in close proximity to the remains and are believed to be associated with the discovery. They include a pair of blue shorts with a brown belt, blue long sleeve shirt, a pair of 42-44 sized “ paisley” boxer shorts, size 10.5 shoes and a complete set of upper dentures. There were additional items unearthed yesterday that may assist in identifying the deceased.
Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office at 90-824-8304 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-8477 (TIPS).
