St. Johns County Students Best in State for Algebra Exams

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Some First Coast students have come out on top after the state released the scores of its first Algebra I End-of-Course exams.

More than half of the students in St. Johns County scored in the top one-third on the test. The county's students had an average score that was six points higher than the average for the state as a whole.

The new tests were required for any student who was currently taking Algebra I, and they replaced the FCAT math exam this year for ninth-graders.

Next year, those students will take an end-of-course exam in Geometry rather than the FCAT math exam.

"I am so proud of everyone and very grateful for the hard work done by our teachers and curriculum staff," said Superintendent Joseph Joyner. "This is special for the algebra teachers but a victory for math instruction at all grade levels."
