Nease NJROTC Orienteering Team Headed for Nationals

For the first time in its history, the Orienteering Team for Nease High School NJROTC is headed for Nationals!

On February 5, 2001, 35 Navy JROTC teams from Georgia and North Florida competed at the Area 12 Regional Orienteering Championships at Mistletoe State Park, north of Thompson, GA. Through the use of a compass, landmarks, map reading, and a series of directions, cadets navigate their way through marked land courses, in wooded and open field areas. Check points along the way must be reached, and marked off. The competitors are timed on how fast they complete the marked course. Any check points missed result is a deduction.

For Nease, it was a day of celebration. Green Course honors went to Cadet Garrison Wetmore (4th place), Cadet Tyler Fugelberg (9th place), and Cadet Avery Poirier (14th place). Orange Course honors went to Cadet Steven Stanfield (10th place). Nease cadets competing include Cadet Shane Blalock, Cadet Brandon DeAguero, Cadet John Ducote, Cadet John Duncan, Cadet Tyler Fugleberg, Cadet Cody Gibbons, Cadet William Kohler, Cadet Edward McCarthy, Cadet Avery Poirier, Cadet Aaron Remmer, Cadet Steven Stanfield, and Cadet Garrison Wetmore.

Nease finished 2nd on the Green Course, and 3rd Overall for the day. Nease Naval Science instructor Gunnery Sergeant Duane Hanson accompanied the cadets for the weekend. “They were all so excited when the results were announced”. The top 5 teams qualify to move on to the National Competition to be held February 19, 2011 at Hard Labor Creek, in Rutledge , GA.
