Teen shot by deputy had $5K of crack in car | News

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A deputy involved shooting sends a local teen to the hospital.

A deputy with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office was doing routine patrol and noticed a "suspicious vehicle," in the parking lot of the Quality Inn and Suites at 2310 S.R. 16 near Outlet Mall Blvd., according to Sgt. Chuck Mulligan with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy ran the tag of the 2012 Kia Sorento around 5:45 a.m. and discovered the vehicle was allegedly stolen out of Hastings, according to Sheriff Shoar with the St Johns County Sheriff's Office.
The deputy called for backup. 

When a second deputy arrived, they allegedly approached two suspects in the vehcile; 17-year-old Brandon Cheques Rich and 31-year-old Kimberly Lashane Davis. The suspects were allegedly given commands by deputies, but Rich ignored commands.

Instead, Rich allegedly reached for the center console of the car. A deputy fired one shot, striking Rich in the leg, according to Shoar.
The teen was taken to Flagler Hospital hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Rich was later transported to the St. Johns County Jail.

According to Sheriff Shoar, the teen is a local convicted felon and is now cooperating with deputies. The female suspect is also cooperating with deputies.

The deputy was not injured during the incident, Shoar said.

A search warrant obtained for the vehicle revealed over 75 pieces of crack cocaine, a street value of $5000, was located in the area of the center console.

Rich is facing charges of grand theft and resisting an officer without violence. Davis was arrested for violation of probation.
An investigation is ongoing.
