Cat only 'an inch wide' after being lost for 2 months | News
ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH, Fla. -- They say cats have nine lives and Tom the Tabby is proving that to be true.
"I just couldn't believe how thin, he was literally an inch wide," said Elizabeth Moore.
You can see in these pictures that Elizabeth Moore took just how emaciated her cat Tom was just a few weeks ago.
One Sunday in late November, he didn't show up.
"We actually had given up on him. It had been two months. We talked about it and decided there wasn't any way he was going to survive no matter where he was," she said.
But on January 20, the Moores got an unexpected knock at their door.
"I didn't think it was him because she said 'we have a small tabby in the garage that's been there for five days' and I said 'that's not our cat because our cat is large cat and he's been missing for eight weeks.'
"I could tell it was him right away but when I held him, I was completely in shock. He was just completely bones. He couldn't even hold his head up. He just laid on me. I couldn't believe it was him and that he was alive."
Three-year-old Tom the Tabby had miraculously survived, but he had lost so much weight, dropping from 12 pounds to just four pounds, the vet said there was only a 10 percent chance he would make it.
Tom proved him wrong. Despite losing two-thirds of his body weight, having a five-inch gash on his back, being anemic and undergoing a blood transfusion, this tabby is one strong kitty.
And after spending more than $2,000 nursing him back to health, he is expected to make a full recovery.
"People wonder how we could spend that much money on a cat but we felt like if he tried that hard for eight weeks to stay alive that was the least we could do for him was fight for him eight weeks. I can't even imagine and don't want to think what he's been through."
The Moore's aren't sure how he got trapped in their neighbors garage or what he ate to survive.
