ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Three people have been arrested in connection with an attempted armed robbery that happened on Friday. A deputy who responded to the initial call suffered serious injuries in a crash near State Road 13 and Scott Road.

Dustin Layne Vann, 26, of Fort Lauderdale is charged with attempted armed robbery, grand theft auto, aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude, and violation of probation; Zachary James Shull, 18, of Mississippi, is charged with attempted armed robbery; and Samantha Shante Lindsay, 18, of Idaho is charged with principle to armed robbery.

According to a release from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, these suspects are also facing South Florida-based felony charges.

Around 10:30 a.m. Friday, a woman walking her dog on Vintage Oak Circle was approached by two men, one of whom pointed a gun and demanded money or possessions, according to the release.

The woman didn't have anything to give, so the suspects got into a car and left. She called police to report the incident.

A vehicle matching the description given by the victim was spotted at a nearby convenience store. This vehicle was later found to be reported stolen out of South Florida.

One of the male suspects and the female fled into the woods, while the other male fled in the vehicle, according to the release. The male and female who went into the woods were captured.

While in pursuit, the male suspect driving the vehicle crashed it in the area of the 10600 block of County Road 13, and then fled into the woods.

As he was responding to the initial attempted robbery call, Deputy Richard Thurman crashed as he swerved to avoid another vehicle on State Road 13. Thurman was transported to Shands Jacksonville with serious injuries, according to the release.

The male who crashed the stolen car was later found at a convenience store on State Road 16. A pickup truck that matched the description of a pickup that was reported stolen from property on County Road 208 was seen at the store. The wanted man was found inside the store and taken into custody.
