ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A man has died after police say he attempted to carjack a family in a St. Augustine neighborhood.

Police say around 1:45 Sunday afternoon David Blythe, 40, got into an argument with his girlfriend at the St. Johns County Main Library on U.S. 1 near downtown.

He walked away and went down an alley behind a home on Sanchez Avenue.

Police say Blythe attempted to carjack a family and then jumped into the family's truck.

The man in the truck, William Theis Carcaba, ran inside his father's home at 146 Cunningham Street to get a gun.

Police say Carcaba's father came outside to confront Blythe. That's when Blythe put Carcaba's father in a chokehold.

When Carcaba came outside with a gun, he shot Blythe in the head, according to police.

Blythe died instantly.

Investigators are questioning Carcaba.

Police said the shooting appears to be justified.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has arrived and is investigating the case.
