Man and Woman Arrested, Accused of Trafficking Over 1200 Pills

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A report of suspicious activity at the Pilot truck stop on County Road 210 led police to two people accused of being in illegal possession of over 1200 prescription pills.

Deputies with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office were called to the truck stop shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday to investigate a report of "suspicious activity," according to an arrest report.

Police identified the two people in the car as Angela Stegel, 28, of Auburndale, Fla., and Clinton Daniels, 26, of Craborcher, West Virginia.

When deputies arrived they found a grey Toyota Camry with West Virginia plates.  A man was sitting in the driver's seat and a woman in the passenger's seat.  As police attempted to have the two people get out of the car, they began making "overt and suspicious movements," according to police.

As police were searching the inside of the vehicle they found a "condom filled with a substance wrapped in tape in plain view in the passenger seat next to where the seat belt connection was located," according to the report.

Police retrieved the condom and "immediately recognized it as being pills wrapped up in tape and stuffed inside a condom for insertion into a body cavity for transport."

During their initial questioning, the report says Stegel began to hyperventilate and asked for medical assistance because she is 4 to 5 months pregnant, according to police.  St. Johns County Fire/Rescue responded and stated she was "fine" according to the report.

Deputies were not able to identify to which suspect the pills belonged however, when they questioned Stegel, she admitted to having pills in her under garments.

Stegel was taken into a restroom at the truck stop where deputies found two more plastic bags of pills.  Police asked her if she had any other pills or illegal substances on her and Stegel replied she did not.  Both Stegel and Daniels were then taken to the St. Johns County Jail.

Once they were at the jail, police said they found Stegel had additional pills when several  fell out as she took off her socks and shoes.  When the pills fell out, police said Stegel attempted to eat several of them, consuming six to seven 5 mg Oxycodone pills.

As a result of Stegel swallowing the pills, she was taken to the Flagler Hospital Emergency Room for observation.

According to the arrest report, Stegel had 876 pills in her possession including Xanax and Oxycodone.  Clinton Daniels had 361 pills in his possession according to the same report.

Due to the large quantity of pills, both Daniels and Stegel were charged with Trafficking in Narcotics.

Because Stegel is accused of introducing an illicit substance into a detention center and attempting to eat the pills, she is also charged with tampering with evidence and introducing contraband into a correctional facility.
