Skeletal Remains Found in Wooded Area | News
ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is searching the woods in West St. Johns County today after skeletal remains were found there Saturday evening.
Sgt. Chuck Mulligan, PIO for the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, said the remains were located in a remote wooded area by a person looking to purchase land in the area Saturday evening.
The discovery was made too late in the day for police to conduct a search to they started their investigation Sunday.
Detectives are searching the woods for any potential evidence. There are approximately ten deputies searching the woods located near McCullough Creek which is located in western St. Johns County. Police believe the remains may have been there for years.
Yesterday the remains were sent to the Medical Examiner's Office in Jacksonville. The remains were in an "advanced stage of decomposition," according to Mulligan.
The initial examination by the Medical Examiner was unable to confirm a match to any known missing persons in St. Johns County. Forensic examinations by the office are ongoing, Mulligan said. Additionally, investigators with St. Johns County are contacting surrounding law enforcement counties to begin case comparisons.
According to Mulligan, police believe the remains are that of a male, although those findings are inconclusive. Investigators found a pair of blue shorts with a brown belt, blue long sleeve shirt, a pair of 42-44 sized "paisley" boxer shorts, size 10.5 shoes and a complete set of upper dentures.
Police hope a friend or family member of the deceased will recognize the items as belonging to a missing person.
Today police found other clothing items and a bone. They have not yet released what those items are. They expect to be there gathering evidence the rest of the day.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is conducing the search of the wooded area. Joining detectives from St. Johns are specialized K-9 units from the Brevard County Sheriff's Office and recruits from the St. Johns River Community College Police Academy.
The K-9 units were called in due to their specialized cadaver dogs. There is no reason to believe the remains belong to a missing person from Brevard County at this time.
