The 20th Annual Lighthouse Festival

The 20th Annual St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum Festival is scheduled to be held on March 17, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Festival features local musicians and entertainers throughout the day, special maritime-inspired games, arts and crafts for children, food, refreshments, pony rides, terrestrial and maritime archaeology activities, contests, nature shows and presentations, and so much more. Also, the Junior Service League at St. Augustine will be hosting the Michelob Ultra 5K Run/Walk.

The quick answer is that we are in a health crisis.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that one in nine adults has diabetes and if current trends continue, one in three will be diabetic by the year 2050.  But there is some good news.  People are waking up to the fact that local produce is better for their health.  In fact, the USDA reports that sales of local foods through farmers’ markets, grocers and restaurants amounted to $4.8 billion in 2008 and is expected to grow to $7 billion in sales for 2011.

Now that winter and some colder temperatures are here, Safe Kids Northeast Florida, led by Wolfson Children’s Hospital, has a seasonal reminder for parents and caregivers about transporting children in car seats. Infants, toddlers and children riding in car seats with internal harnesses should not be placed in the car seat with thick jackets, sweaters, or coats on, due to the issue of “coat compression.”

The holiday season has arrived! It’s a time for parties, presents and holiday cheer. However, it can also be a season of little activity and over-indulging. As the weather cools down, children are often tempted to stay inside in front of the T.V. or a video game rather than play outside. Holiday specials also can draw your family to the T.V. screen this time of year. Eating healthily can present additional challenges when faced with party buffets, holiday sweets and large family meals.
