The St. Johns County Public Library System is proud to announce that it has chosen Lauren Hillenbrand’s “Unbroken” for St. Johns Reads 2012.  “Unbroken” is the story of Louis Zamperini, whose story could have filled many books.  A boy on the verge of juvenile delinquency, Zamperini channeled his energy into running, which took him to the 1936 Berlin Olympics and within reach of the four-minute mile.

During World War II, his true mettle would show itself, as he endured 43 days lost at sea only to find himself in a Japanese POW Camp. “Unbroken” is a book as mesmerizing as it is inspiring, and will appeal to all audiences.  From Hillenbrand’s website:

“On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood.  Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard.  So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.”

“In her long-awaited new book, seven years in the making, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in her blockbuster bestseller, Seabiscuit.  Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

This is the seventh year that the Library System has hosted St. Johns Reads.  Throughout the month of February, each library location will host a variety of programs and events including book talks, lectures about WWII Liberty Ships, Japanese culture, a POW documentary, Genealogy programs, dance lessons and much more.  The entire program will wrap up with a spectacular Salute to Veteran’s Dance at the Council On Aging River House on Sunday, February 26th,   2 – 5 pm, featuring live music by the E.T. Swings the Thing Band.
