The Turtles are Coming! Sea Turtle Nesting Begins

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Sea turtle season starts May 1, but turtles could start nesting early.

"We could have a nest tonight," explained Tara Dodson with St. Johns County.

Last year was a record season for sea turtle nests in St. Johns County, but officials are not sure if that will continue this season.

"Because we had a record year, there's potential for us to have yet another record year if not more than what we had last year and there's the potential that the numbers could drop dramatically," said Dodson.

Volunteers will begin monitoring the beaches looking for turtle tracks May 1.

The start of the season also marks the start of protective regulations.  The beach closes to drivers at 7:30 p.m. starting May 1 and anyone who has outdoor lights and lives at the beach should replace their current bulbs with ones that are 40 watts and fewer.

If you see a sea turtle or a nest, do not get close to it.  Instead, call the Wildlife Pager at (904) 227-0023 to report the sighting.
