Teen breakup leads to alleged kidnapping and assault of ex-girlfriend

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A recent breakup leads to a terrifying ordeal for one local teen.

A Jacksonville teen was arrested Thursday after police say he kidnapped his ex-girlfriend Wednesday evening.

The 17-year-old victim ran into a GATE station seeking help after allegedly being forced to drive around with her ex-boyfriend while he threatened her and her family, according to a report from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office. She told officers her ex-boyfriend, Levi Dalton Simmons, 18, cut her off in another vehicle, approached her car with a bat and claimed he’d harm her family if she didn’t let him inside.

Once in the vehicle, Simmons allegedly ordered her to follow a white SUV. When the victim did not comply and tried to flee, Simmons allegedly ran her down, put his hand over her mouth and threatened her with a knife, the report details. The victim also claims Simmons grabbed the wheel of the vehicle and jerked it to make it seem like they were going to crash, “in an effort to further terrorize her,” the report said.

The girl told officers that Simmons grabbed her arm at one point and said she fought him off by punching him.  At that point, the report says Simmons put the car in reverse and pulled the emergency break. The victim reached for her phone and tried to call 911, but told officers Simmons took her phone and threw it out a window before he got out of the vehicle.

The reports shows that the victim was finally able to get away on foot and get to a nearby GATE station. The victim told police she had broken up with Simmons earlier in the day and believes the events were related to ending the relationship.

Simmons was booked into the St. Johns County Jail early Friday morning. He is charged with kidnapping and battery and is being held on $16,500 bond.
