Man Accused of Stealing Mom's Jewels to Pay Drug Dealer Debt

A St. Johns County man was arrested on Sunday after allegedly stealing over $30,000 worth of jewelry from his mother.

Timothy J Matthews, 34, is charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property after allegedly swiping the jewels from his mother's bedroom. Matthews is accused of selling the jewelry to a pawn shop called "Cash for Treasures."

Matthews stated he is addicted to painkillers, according to a SJSO police report, and that he stole the jewelry and sold it to pay an individual who was "threatening him."

Matthews was booked in the St Johns County Jail and held on $123,5000 bond.
