Clerk Crawls to Get Gun Dropped During Parking Lot Fight
Crime

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- An alert store clerk crawled under a truck with three children inside to retrieve a gun that had gotten loose during a fight.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office offense report said the fight occurred at the Kangaroo convenience store on State Road 207 near State Road 312 Saturday just before noon.

Witness testimony recorded in the report indicates the victim left the store and was jumped by 20-year-old David Drew Sheffield.

The victim told investigators Sheffield accused him of stealing from Sheffield's home, so they began fighting.

The victim and the witnesses said Sheffield then pulled a gun, which the victim was able to knock from his hand.

The store clerk who was calling 911 heard someone yell that there was a gun on the ground, so she ran outside, crawled under the truck, and got the gun and took it back inside.  In the truck were the driver who had taken the victim to the store, another friend and her three children.

As soon as they arrived at the scene, deputies placed Sheffield and the victim in custody as they gathered information. They eventually let the victim go and arrested Sheffield.

Sheffield, from St. Augustine, remains jailed on $92,500 bond on charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, battery, carrying a concealed weapon, altering the identification of a weapon (the report indicated an apparent attempt to remove the serial number) and violation of probation.
