Relay for Life of Pedro Menendez Scheduled this Weekend

The 2011 Relay for Life of Pedro Menendez is scheduled for this weekend in Veteran's Memorial Stadium at Pedro Menendez High School. More that 308 participants on 25 community teams have spent the last several days, weeks and months raising money for the American Cancer Society.

The Relay starts on Saturday with a Survivors Lap, an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories that were achieved over cancer. After dark, participants honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer.

At last count the teams had raised more that $18,000 to battle cancer. The team from Otis Mason Elementary School was leading the pack with $4,800 raised, much of it from a 5K Race it sponsored a few weeks ago. The leading individual fundraiser is also on the Mason team. Jenny Albanesi is a second grader at Mason and a cancer survivor who has been able to generate $1,375 from friends and family sponsoring her in the Relay.

There is still time to sponsor individuals and support the cause. More details are available at http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=29699&pg=entry?/. Donations can also be made online.
