Fishing at the Vilano Beach Pier
Fishing at the Vilano Beach Pier

As you are headed into St. Augustine, Florida, from Jacksonville, Florida, on A1A south, be sure to stop at the Vilano Beach pier.  If you arrive in time for lunch, there are several cafes as well as a restaurant on the Intercoastal waterway that sits next to the bridge.  Additionally, if you wish to picnic, there is a brand-new Publix grocery store within 1000 feet of the pier.

On Sunday afternoon, there were several fishermen, bicyclists, strollers, families, and seniors enjoying the weather.  Unlike the Jacksonville Beach pier, the Vilano Beach pier is free.  However, it is not as long as the Jacksonville Beach pier and stretches into the Intercoastal waterway, not into the Atlantic Ocean.  For that reason, it makes for a beautiful Sunday afternoon to be able to visit the Jacksonville Beach pier for one dollar per person and then head south to Vilano Beach to stroll the Vilano Beach pier at no charge. As you stroll the Vilano Beach pier, be sure that you are not in a hurry and take the time to talk to the fishermen and watch for the St. Augustine attraction "The Pirate Ship" as well as the boaters in the waterway.  You will also see plenty of wildlife and fishermen casting their nets.  Keep in mind that if you plan to take photographs of  historic downtown St. Augustine from the pier, you should arrive early in the morning so the sun is at your back in the East.  And, as always, take a sweater or windbreaker.  The winds can be high in this area even in the summer creating a natural air-conditioning. The lazy seaside community of Vilano Beach is interesting in and of itself.  The small hotels and architecture will take you back to the 1960's.  It could be used as a movie set for that time period.  After visiting the pier, it is a brief drive over the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge (Vilano Bridge) into historic downtown St. Augustine.  You can actually walk or ride a bike over the bridge, but be sure you have the water supply and energy to be able to make it back to your car!
