Florida 2nd  for “Mass Layoffs” in The Nation For August

According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics Florida was 2nd in the Nation for mass layoffs in the month of August. In this report each “Mass Layoff” is defined as the layoff of at least 50 employees from a single workplace.

The three states affected the worst by mass layoffs were:

  • 1.California - having 251 Mass Layoffs
  • 2. Florida- having 78 Mass Layoffs
  • 3. New York - having 71 Mass Layoffs


Across the Nation there were more than 1,500 mass layoffs affecting more than 170,000 employees in August.

The Bureau of Labor statistics for August also showed that Florida was one of four states with the highest increase in employment for the month.

 The four states with the highest increase of employment in August:

 

  • 1.Minnesota - creating approximately 28,000 jobs
  • 2.North Carolina - creating approximately 16,000 jobs
  • 3.Arizona - creating approximately 15,000 jobs
  • 4.Florida - creating 9,500 jobs


A report issued by RISEP on the “State of Working Florida 2011” states:

“More than 2 years after the official end of the recession, the path to recovery is not yet clear in Florida or the Nation.”

In July Florida lost 22,000 jobs due losses in Local Government and Public Schools alone.
