Sir Francis Drake's Shipwrecks Found by St. Augustine Man

Sir Francis Drake's Shipwrecks Found by St. Augustine Man

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Sir Francis Drake had his way with St. Augustine in the 16th century, and it took until the 21st century for the city to get its revenge.

Drake's attack came in 1586, while the Spanish and English were at war.

Pat Croce founded the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum in 2010, and left last week to find Drake. According to Croce's blog entries, he and his team found Drake's sunken ships late last week in Portobelo Bay, on the north shore of Panama, where Drake met Davy Jones and has been entombed ever since.

"This is absolutely a dream come true - to find the ships of the most successful pirate in history, who singlehandedly wreaked havoc on Spain's New Empire," Croce said.
