Limelight Theatre announces its 20th Season Celebration, which kicks off in September--the 20th anniversary of the community theatre's founding. Executive Director Beth Lambert announced the seven main stage productions, which are presented year-round on Limelight's Matuza Main Stage and comprise the core of Limelight Theatre's programming. "We are so proud to launch our 20th season this September," she said. "This season is certainly destined to be one of the best ever--with two exciting musicals, great comedies and poignant drama that has special resonance with this community as the home of the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind." The show she is referring to is Children of a Lesser God, which will be interpreted for the hearing impaired for several performances.

"I'm very excited to add that one of our two founders, Jean Rahner, has agreed to direct our third play of the season, Harvey," Lambert added. Harvey is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase about a man who has an imaginary friend--a rabbit the size of a man--named Harvey. The play was adapted in 1950 for film and became one of the most beloved movies of all time, starring Jimmy Stewart.

"One of our goals for the 20th season is to draw attention to the fact that we operate year-round and are the answer to the oft-asked question of 'What is there to do at night in St. Augustine?'" Lambert continued. "In addition to the seven main stage productions, we also offer our children's theatre program, KidzfACTory, which offers programming throughout the year as well--workshops, classes and performance camps that culminate with a profesisonal-quality performance in front of an audience in our studio theatre."

The kickoff show for Limelight Theatre's 20th Season is A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, directed and choreographed by Christina Cruz with musical direction by Shelli Long. Written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbert with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, this musical first debuted on Broadway in 1962 and was an instant success. Almost 50 years later, it is still an audience favorite. "What a fun, festive show to launch this wonderful, year-long celebration of live theatre," said Lambert. The show is sponsored by All American Air Charitable Foundation and the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council. Haven't heard that chant since your college days? Well, throw on your best toga and party down like it's 199 B.C.! The weekend prior to the season opening of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Limelight Theatre will host a 20th Season Kickoff Toga Party and preview of the show, on Saturday, September 17 from 6-11 p.m. Tickets are $50 in advance. "We wanted to kick off the season with a fun, festive, let-your-hair-down party," says Lambert, who is lining up a variety of entertainment, which will be featured throughout the theatre for this fun-filled fundraising event.

Cast members of Forum will be on hand to perform vignettes and songs from the show, says Lambert, "and we plan to transform the Koger-Gamache Studio Theatre into a disco--Club Coliseo--complete with a DJ and dancing," A Mediterranean-inspired dinner will be served at stations throughout the theatre along with a selection of wines and and a dessert buffet. San Sebastian Winery will offer wine tastings throughout the evening and other vendors will offer sweet and savory tastes and treats. A professional photographer will take party photos onstage that can be purchased on the spot. "It's going to be a fun-filled evening, so make your plans to attend now!" Lambert said. 


Along with all the festivities, the seven main stage production poster designs will be unveiled in the Grand Lobby of the theatre. "We enlisted seven St. Augustine-based designers and design firms to develop the show posters for the season and this collectible series will be featured in large formats in our Grand Lobby throughout the season," said Lambert. Participants in the season poster series include: Yvette Monell, publisher of Old City Life Magazine; Seth Ferreira of Troika Studio; Jill Miles of MileStone Graphics; Ari Sufalko of Studio Zenk; Tyler Boutin of PIP Printing and Marketing Services of St. Augustine; Alena Cochrane of Alena's Photography; and Wendy Philcox of Publishing Partners, Inc.

The crown jewel of Limelight Theatre's 20th Season Celebration is a rollicking musical revue featuring cast members and musicians from some of Limelight's most beloved productions staged in the beautiful Flagler College Auditorium in historic downtown St. Augustine. Scheduled for Saturday, January 14, 2012, Limelight Theatre's Emerald Anniversary Gala will feature an option of attending a pre-show patron party at the elegant and historic Lighter Museum, starting at 6 p.m. Following the party, attendees can simply cross the street and go next door to attend the show, which begins at 8 p.m. and features a dessert buffet during intermission. Event chairs for the Gala, which is hosted by the Limelight Theatre Board of Directors, are board members, Linda Matuza and Frank Riccardo.

"This lively and colorful show will also feature guest artists from several other performing arts organizations in St. Augustine who are enthusiastically joining in Limelight Theatre's celebration," said Lambert, who will serve as producer of the show. Participating organizations include First Coast Opera, the St. Augustine Community Orchestra, the St. Johns County Center for the Performing Arts at St. Augustine High School and Vivace.
