Public Spaces

Improvements to State Road (SR) 16 in St. Johns County, including access to the Westgate Plaza, will begin this week, according to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

The changes are being made to improve safety and reduce the number of crashes that occur while vehicles attempt to make a u-turn at the median opening just west of the Westgate Plaza, across from North First Street.  The work will include:

  • removing a portion of the existing grassed median between Lord Street and North First Street to accommodate the new westbound left turn lane
  • widening the median opening at North First Street, to make u-turns safer
  • extending the eastbound right turn lane into the Westgate Plaza, back to the Seventh Day Adventist Church
  • making necessary changes to the drainage structures to accommodate the new westbound left turn lane
  • extending the existing traffic separator west of Collins Road up to the State Road 16/Collins Road intersection

The project will take about two months to complete depending on weather and unforeseen conditions. During the project, daytime lane closures will be scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Weekend work is not scheduled at this time but may be allowed. Approximately 21,000 motorists travel this section of SR 16 on average every day.

TCD of Orlando was hired by FDOT to construct the project at a cost of $214,829 and is expected to complete the work by February 2011, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
