St. Johns County Veterans Office Wins State Award

The St. Johns County Veterans Service Office has received recognition from the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. Department of Florida for being named the State Service Office of the Year for 2010. Kenneth Thie, Director of the Florida Veterans of Foreign Wars, presented the award to the staff of the St. Johns County Veterans Service Office during the County Commission meeting Tuesday.

Thie said St. Johns County should be proud of this award and the high quality of service it represents. Florida is recognized as one of the best states in the country for providing veterans services, Thie said, so to be named the top service office out of the 67 counties in Florida is especially significant. “The staff of the St. Johns County Veterans Service Office have really shown how dedicated and caring they are, and their quality of care is exceptional,” he said.

That staff includes Director Joseph McDermott, as well as Rick Rees, Heather Andrews and Tammy Shirley. McDermott said he is honored to accept this award, and he thanks his staff, the Board of County Commissioners, all St. Johns County employees who support the Veterans Service Office and the citizens of St. Johns County.

St. Johns County is home to more than 50 service organizations and more than 18,000 veteran residents. In the past year the Veterans Service Office has assisted in acquiring more than $37 million in benefits such as compensation, pension and education for veterans and their families.
