St. Augustine to Host County's Largest Veterans Day Celebration

St. Augustine's annual Veterans Day celebration and ceremony - the largest event of its kind in St. Johns County - will be held in St. Augustine, Nov. 11.

The celebration begins with displays opening at 9:00am and a traditional military ceremony including a "Massing of the Colors," at the Special Events Field Thursday Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. This event is free and open to the public.

The guest speaker for the ceremony will be Brigadier General Joseph G.

Balskus Assistant Adjutant General for Air, Florida National Guard, and Commander of the Florida Air National Guard.

The 2009 Ceremony was canceled due to inclement weather.  The 2008 Veterans Day ceremony drew more than 450 people to downtown St. Augustine, and this year's event will again feature military displays.

Visitors can view displays of military equipment and aircraft, and booths provided by the many local veterans organizations set up at the Special Events Field, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Parking is available at the St. Augustine's Historic Downtown Parking Facility located adjacent to the St. Augustine and St. Johns County Visitor's Information Center on Castillo Drive.

The event is sponsored by Florida National Guard, the St. Augustine Chapter of the Military Officers Association and the St. Johns County Veterans Service Office.
