St. Johns County Fire Rescue (SJCFR) is pleased to announce the following two fire rescue personnel as the 2010 Firefighter and Paramedic of the year.  They were both selected based on nominations received from their peers, with the final decision being made by a department appointed awards committee.

Firefighter Paramedic Justin Estes was selected by the committee as the Paramedic of the Year.  During his time with SJCFR Justin has consistently demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and unwavering positive attitude towards both fellow personnel and citizens in the community.  Justin supports the Department through several additional duties including: Special Operations Team member, Advanced Life Support Competition Team member and he volunteers his time for Children's Cancer Research programs.  Justin’s efforts, energy and expertise have increased the Departments overall capabilities.  He exemplifies the selfless and caring image that the public associates with members of the fire service.  According to Lt. Isaac Frazier, “It isn’t just one call that makes a Paramedic of the Year; it’s the dedication and pride they show every shift when they think nobody is watching.”

Firefighter Luis Etchenique was selected by the committee as the Firefighter of the Year.  During his time with St. Johns County Fire Rescue Luis has been a valuable asset showing an unwavering drive and dedication to continually provide a positive work environment and a positive image of SJCFR to the community.  He is humble, knowledgeable, virtuous and a pleasure to work with.  Luis is always going the extra step to ensure high quality work in all his assignments.  He is passionate about what he does and always willing to share what he has learned.  During the past year Luis has worked to develop numerous fireground training programs, worked as a field training officer, trained as a Marine Rescue responder and worked individually with many Department members looking to improve their open water swim and rescue skills.  According to Captain Jason Gerona, “When I look back over my career, there are an elite group of people that in my heart and mind made a difference, are motivational and inspiring.  Without a doubt, Luis is in this group.”

Both of these individuals will be formally recognized along with several Department promotions and commendations during a department awards ceremony scheduled for 1500 hours on January 27, 2011 in the St. Johns County Administration building Auditorium located at 500 San Sebastian View, St. Augustine FL.  The members of the media are welcome to attend.
