Salt Life in St. Augustine Beach approved for fewer parking spaces

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Across from the volleyball courts at the St. Augustine Beach pier, construction of the new Salt Life Food Shack restaurant is underway.

Some of the volleyball players on the courts Monday think the addition could be positive for the area.

Most people welcome the new business. Even a competing businessmen like Sunset Grille owner Peter Darios supports the eatery.

His restaurant is just a few blocks away.

"Business is good for business because business brings business," Darios stated.

Jeff Jabot with Salt Life said the new Salt Life Food Shack will have 6,200 square feet that is air conditioned and other open-air dining.

Chaplain offers $1K scholarship for St. Johns students to pray

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- What goes on inside a church -- prayer -- is at the center of a controversy in St Johns County.

The school board voted 'no' to allowing an inspirational message at graduation this year, which could include a religious prayer, if the student chosen to give the message decided to do that.

The school board wanted control over what was said and feared a lawsuit if a prayer took place. In fact, a letter sent by the Freedom From Religion Foundation said they would be asking for a lawsuit.

A former Navy chaplain in Colorado has weighed in, offering scholarship money to the first student to say the Lord's Prayer, or pray in the name of Jesus at a graduation ceremony.

Catamaran captain falls overboard, requires rescue

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A boat captain fell overboard near St. Augustine Inlet on Wednesday afternoon while sailing a catamaran.

Jeremy Robshaw, an official with St. Johns County Fire and Rescue, told First Coast News a distress call came from the captain requesting a tow.

While waiting for the tow company to arrive, the captain was attempting to tie up the boat's line when he fell overboard, Robshaw said.

The sea towing company was able to rescue the captain from the rough surf, but the rescue mission wasn't over -- the catamaran was sailing away unmanned.

On board was a 38-year-old woman, but she didn't know how to sail.

Rescue swimmers hopped on jet skis and took the captain back out to his boat.
